Planting Instructions
|
 |
- Dig a hole so that there is at least 15cm space between the pot and the outside of the hole all the way around.
- Remove the pot from the plant. If the roots are growing in a circular pattern or root bound, use a knife and cut into the side of the root ball in 3 or 4 different places, approximately 3mm deep. This allows the plant to establish quickly.
- If the plant has a fibre pot , this usually means it was freshly potted, and you would plant pot and all. Cut 3 or 4 'X's around the side of the pot and cut away the top lip of the fibre pot. Try to do this while the plant is in the hole so as not to disturb the root system.
- When you back fill the hole, mix up the good top soil with approximately 40% peat moss. Firmly stamp the soil around the root ball to ensure there are no air pockets.
- When you are planting any new plant, ensure that it gets adequate water until the plant is well established. Ensure soil is kept moist.
- When planting caliper trees with wire baskets, remove the tying tape from the top of the basket. Bend the wire loops of the basket back into the hole. Ensure the loops are below ground level. It is important to always leave wire baskets attached to root ball so as not to damage the roots trying to remove the basket. The burlap will disintegrate and the roots will grow through the holes in the wire basket, however it is advisable to cut away as much of the burlap and wire as possible. The burlap must not stick out of the soil.
- Always use a 10-52-10 fertilizer when transplanting. The '52' in the 10-52-10 is the phosphorus which is essential for the roots to get established. Apply every 2 weeks for 2 months. Do not fertilize any plants except annuals after July 15th.
- Trees over 8' tall should be staked for at least one full year. We use a tri-staking method for best stability.
One stake on the north side, one stake on the west side and one between the east & south side. Always use a rubber hose around the trunk.
- The following spring, after planting, you may use an all purpose fertilizer such as a 20-20-20 for the deciduous plants and 30-10-10 for your evergreens.
